1st Joint Public Affairs Unit

Government Organization

Celebrating the work of past and present members of the 1st Joint Public Affairs Unit, and all those pioneers who helped define Australia's national identity through their portrayals of Australians at war.

The 1st Joint Public Affairs Unit is the Australian Defence Force's strategic news gathering and specialist information capability.

The Unit is comprised of around 30 personnel from the Navy, Army and Air Force. Unit members are continuously deployed around the globe in support of Australian operations and major exercises to:

- tell the ADF's story,
- capture important historical moments, and
- provide specialist information support to commanders.

Our roots go back to the original pioneers of the profession who helped forge the Australian national identity through two World Wars: Frank Hurley, Charles Bean, Damien Parer and George Silk, to name a few.
